Happy Last Day!

So today is the last day of school in my district, and with the copious amount of free time I'll have this summer (in between teaching summer school and writing curriculum - who says teachers have summer off?), I'm going to start my blog. I read the news voraciously and always have ideas in my head, and to be honest, my husband is getting tired of hearing me talk about ESOL, education, and language in the news. So to be kinder to him, I'll just put my thoughts and opinions on the internet, where everyone else puts theirs.
On this last day of school I was happy to lead students in a reflection on our goals for the unit and do our final Circle to close out the year. Then I handed out awards for the semester - Honor Roll, Excellence, Most Improved, and Leadership. We read the novel The Giver, and as part of their final project, they had to decide Assignments for five of their classmates. What I then assembled was a sweet, funny, sometimes spot-on, sometimes way-off reflection on how my students perceive their classmates. For example, one student who was chosen to be Supervisor because he is "always checking his grades online," and another was chosen to be a pilot because she "seems strong and can hold herself very patiently." It was a nice way to wrap up this long school year. Happy summer to all my teacher friends out there. And thank you to all the spouses of teachers for being on the front lines of listening.
